'Islamic car' will point towards Mecca
KORANIC CAR: Malaysian automaker Proton is aiming to produce an "Islamic" car with a Mecca-finding compass and a slot for a Koran.

Malaysia, Iran and Turkey plan to build an "Islamic car" fitted with a compass pointing to Mecca and a compartment to store prayer scarves and a Koran.

The Malaysian state news agency has reported that automaker Proton's MD Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said during a visit to Teheran that the Iranian initiative would be for global export
Proton has an order to supply 5000 taxis to Teheran

Proton has an order to supply 5000 taxis to Teheran as part of that city's $200-million public transport renewal scheme.

Proton has been trying to kick-start its export market to counter a sharp decline in domestic market share that has been blame on a lack of new models and a reputation for poor quality.

It's negotiating an alliance with VW that, it hopes, will reverse falling sales and profits. - AFP
