US gets Smart as fuel cost rise
'SALES COULD REACH 32 000 in 2009'
July 31, 2008
US Smart distributor Roger Penske has revised his 2008 sales estimate as domestic automakers reel from a sharp sales drop in big, thirsty vehicles.
Penske predicted sales would boom beyond an original estimate of 20 000 vehicles
He said: "We expect Smart sales of 24 000 - 27 500 during 2008."
The Smart went on sale in the US for the first time in January 2008. Penske said surging fuel prices had helped boost demand for the small, fuel-efficient car.
Smart sales could reach 30 000 – 32 000 units in 2009 if Daimler could deliver enough vehicles to the US, he added. – AFP
