Check the clutch on your Fireblade
Honda is recalling its 2000-model CBR929 Fireblade for a safety check on the clutch basket. Apparently there have been reports of the dampening springs rubbing against the outer basket when fully compressed and causing excessive wear.
Although the problem has been reported from just five bikes worldwide, Honda is taking it seriously enough to develop an uprated dampener plate and springs because it fears that in extreme cases the basket could fracture. It’s very unlikely that this would cause an accident but the bike would lose drive and generate enormous loss of face for the world’s No.1 motorcycle manufacturer.
Honda UK spokesman Scott Grimsdall said: “The problem appears to be connected to the stress of racing-style standing starts. The recall is a preventative measure.”
He said 929 Blade owners can still ride their bikes as long as they don’t abuse the clutch. Honda dealers worldwide have been notified of the recall and the upgraded parts are on their way from Japan. Riders should wait until they are contacted by the dealer who sold them their bike before bringing it in to be checked.
